Congressman’s Bid for Governors of Michigan and Illinois to Challenge Biden in Democratic Primary Falls Flat as Phone Calls go Straight to Voicemail!
Effort to Recruit Michigan and Illinois Governors to Challenge Biden in Democratic Primary Falls Flat
Rep. Dean Phillips, the latest Democratic challenger to President Joe Biden, took matters into his own hands by personally calling up the governors of Michigan and Illinois, urging them to enter the race. But it seems his efforts were in vain as they ignored his calls. Talk about being left on read!
Phillips didn’t let their lack of response deter him, though. After initially floating the idea in July, he finally made it official by filing the necessary paperwork with the Federal Elections Commission on October 26. This centrist Minnesotan believes that a competition, not a coronation, is what Democrats want in order to challenge the incumbent Biden in the presidential election. While he has praised Biden’s work, Phillips has expressed concerns about the President’s age and fitness for another term.
But here’s where it gets interesting. Phillips didn’t want to take on Biden alone; he wanted some backup. So, he reached out to Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, hoping to convince them to join him in the race against Biden. Unfortunately for Phillips, they didn’t even bother to pick up the phone. Ouch!
It’s worth noting that both Whitmer and Pritzker have been big supporters of Biden’s reelection campaign. Whitmer, who was tapped as the co-chair of his campaign, brushed off Phillips’ call for a moderate governor from the heartland to primary the sitting president. According to her, Biden has a record, gets things done, and cares about the average person. As for Pritzker, he believes that concerns about a candidate’s age should be dismissed, emphasizing that what really matters are the age of the candidate’s ideas.
While Phillips may have a slight advantage over Biden in New Hampshire’s primary due to the President’s name not appearing on the ballot, he still faces an uphill battle to become a serious contender. Plus, groups are already mobilizing to write in Biden’s name to block Phillips’ challenge. It looks like he has quite the mountain to climb.

So, will Phillips be able to overcome the odds and make a dent in Biden’s campaign? Only time will tell. But for now, it seems like his calls for support have fallen on deaf ears. Maybe next time he should try sending a text or leaving a voice message. The ball is in his court!
