Adidas to Sell Unsold Yeezy Shoes for a Good Cause

Adidas has announced that it will be selling its unsold inventory of Yeezy shoes through its smartphone apps and website, starting on Wednesday. This move comes after the brand severed its ties with Kanye West, popularly known as Ye, due to his controversial remarks and behavior. With approximately 1.2 billion euros ($1.3 billion) worth of unsold Yeezys, Adidas has been seeking a responsible way to dispose of them. In May, Adidas CEO Bjørn Gulden highlighted that selling these sneakers and donating a portion of the profits would not only help clear the inventory but also make a positive difference.
The range of Yeezy models that will be available for sale includes the Yeezy Boost 350 V2, 500, and 700, as well as the Yeezy Slide and Foam RNR. While exact details regarding the number of shoes and donation percentages remain undisclosed, Adidas has revealed that part of the proceeds from the Yeezy sales will be donated to the Anti-Defamation League and the Philonise & Keeta Floyd Institute for Social Change, which is led by social justice advocate Philonise Floyd, the brother of George Floyd.
To further demonstrate its commitment to combat antisemitism, Adidas will include blue square pins, representing solidarity in rejecting antisemitism, with Yeezy shoes sold directly in North America. These pins are established by Robert Kraft’s Foundation to Combat Anti-Semitism. By incorporating these symbols, Adidas affirms its dedication to fostering inclusivity and promoting social awareness.
While the initial sale of Yeezy shoes has successfully impacted Adidas’ preliminary second-quarter financial results, the company has also revised its outlook for the year. Instead of a high single-digit decline in revenue, Adidas now anticipates a mid-single-digit decline, amounting to an operating loss of 450 million euros (over $494 million) for the year. However, the brand remains optimistic about the positive impact of future Yeezy sales, believing that they will further boost the company’s financial performance.
Adidas’ decision to sell the unsold Yeezy shoes for a good cause exemplifies its dedication to responsible inventory management and social responsibility. By donating proceeds to organizations addressing social issues such as antisemitism and social change, the company strives to make a tangible difference. The move also reflects Adidas’ commitment to embracing inclusivity, demonstrating solidarity, and promoting awareness in the face of social challenges.
