Elon Musk is widely known as the CEO of both Tesla and SpaceX, but his personal life is just as intriguing as his professional endeavors. Musk has had a series of marriages, divorces, and relationships, and he is also a father to a large number of children, including twins and triplets. Let’s take a closer look at the colorful love life of this tech visionary.
A Love Story at University
Musk’s first wife was Justine Wilson, whom he met at Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada. According to Wilson’s account in Marie Claire, Musk wooed her with his charm from the very beginning. Their love story began when Musk, with two chocolate-chip ice cream cones in hand, showed up at her door, inviting her out. Although Wilson decided to stay in and study that night, the gesture left a lasting impression.
Afterwards, Musk transferred to Wharton while Wilson focused on her writing career. However, their paths crossed again as Musk embarked on his first entrepreneurial venture, and Wilson began working on her debut novel. Musk won Wilson’s heart by giving her his credit card and encouraging her to buy as many books as she desired. Their love story led them to tie the knot in 2000.
Heartbreak and New Beginnings
The couple moved to Los Angeles and had a son named Nevada. Tragically, they lost Nevada to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Despite this immense grief, they went on to have more children, including a set of twins and a set of triplets. Musk and Wilson’s marriage eventually ended in 2008.
After his divorce from Wilson, Musk began dating actress Talulah Riley. Contrary to rumors, their relationship didn’t begin until after Musk’s split from Justine. Musk and Riley first crossed paths at a bar in London called Whisky Mist. Their first marriage lasted four years before Musk tweeted his affection for Riley, expressing his hope that she would find happiness with someone else.

The couple remarried in 2013 but faced another round of divorce proceedings in 2014. Musk filed for divorce on New Year’s Eve of that year, only to withdraw the petition seven months later. However, by 2016, Riley initiated the divorce proceedings, which were then finalized.
Post-Marriage Relationships and Children
Following his divorce from Riley, Musk began a high-profile relationship with actress Amber Heard. The two were linked after Heard’s then-husband, Johnny Depp, reportedly stood her up at the 2016 Met Gala. Despite eventually splitting, Musk and Heard remained close friends.
In 2018, Musk attended the annual Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art with Canadian musician Grimes. The two connected over Twitter and bonded over a shared joke about artificial intelligence. They went on to have two children together, a son and a daughter. However, after three years of dating, Musk and Grimes ended their relationship in September 2021.
Shortly after the breakup with Grimes, Musk was spotted with Australian actress Natasha Bassett, disembarking from his private jet. Musk also had twins with Shivon Zilis, an executive at his company Neuralink, in November 2021. Musk made light of the situation, tweeting about his efforts to combat under-population—a topic he has openly expressed concerns about in the past.
In a surprising twist, the media reported that Musk had allegedly had an affair with Nicole Shanahan, the wife of his longtime friend and Google co-founder, Sergey Brin. The Wall Street Journal reported that Brin filed for divorce in January 2022 after discovering the affair. Musk vehemently denied the allegations, dismissing the report as “total BS,” and Shanahan’s lawyer described it as “an outright lie.”
As of July 2023, it remains unclear who Elon Musk is currently dating. Despite his high-profile relationships and divorces, Musk’s focus continues to be on his significant contributions to the fields of electric vehicles, space exploration, and other groundbreaking technologies.
