Gov. Brian Kemp Troubled by Giuliani’s False Election Statements

Gov. Brian Kemp of Georgia expressed his concerns regarding former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani’s admission of making false statements regarding the integrity of the state’s elections. Giuliani, who had been a personal attorney for former President Donald Trump, had accused two election workers in Fulton County of mishandling ballots. However, Kemp, who firmly rejected Trump’s pressure campaign to overturn President Joe Biden’s victory in Georgia, considered Giuliani’s accusations problematic, given the numerous measures that had been implemented to foster confidence in the state’s electoral system.

Kemp acknowledged the pressure he faced from legislators and others due to Giuliani’s alleged false statements. He emphasized that his primary goal was to ensure secure, accessible, and fair elections in Georgia, and any attempt to manipulate the process was deeply troubling.

Giuliani’s admission came within the context of a defamation lawsuit filed by Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, a mother and daughter poll worker team. These individuals were accused by Giuliani of manipulating ballots during the vote-counting process at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta while working for the Fulton County Board of Elections. Trump, without evidence, claimed that alleged voter fraud in Fulton County was a significant factor in his loss to Biden.

Fulton County, a stronghold for the Democratic Party, overwhelmingly supported Biden with a 73% to 26% vote margin, representing a difference of 243,000 votes.

During Giuliani’s attempt to influence conservative state lawmakers in 2020, Kemp had doubts about the former mayor’s narrative. He even referred to Giuliani’s statements about the vote count in Cobb County as a “joke.” Implying that Giuliani lacked knowledge about the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Kemp showcased skepticism towards his claims.

After the 2020 election, Trump continued to criticize Kemp and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger for refusing to amplify his unfounded election claims. The former president even recruited primary challengers to unseat both men, but Kemp and Raffensperger comfortably won their respective primaries and secured re-election victories.

Overall, Gov. Brian Kemp’s reaction to Giuliani’s false election statements showcases his commitment to upholding the integrity of the electoral process in Georgia. Despite the pressure he faced, Kemp maintained his stance and sought to ensure secure and fair elections in the state.
