When Monkeys and Musk Collide Why Lawmakers are Poking at Neuralink’s Claims of a Simian Massacre
Lawmakers Call for SEC Investigation into Elon Musk's Claims on Monkey Deaths from Neuralink Implants
Elon Musk’s Monkey Business: A Chip on His Shoulder
Elon Musk, the eccentric entrepreneur known for his lofty ambitions and cutting-edge technology, finds himself in hot water once again. This time, it’s about the fuzzy little test subjects of his brain chip venture, Neuralink. But wait, there’s more! Lawmakers are calling for an investigation into possible securities fraud, leaving Musk swinging from controversy to controversy.
According to a report from Wired, four members of the House of Representatives have written to SEC chair Gary Gensler, urging him to dig deeper into Musk’s statements regarding the monkey trials and Neuralink’s brain chip. The plot thickens as reports emerge of a dozen unfortunate primates experiencing health issues and ultimately meeting their demise after receiving the implant. Talk about going bananas!
Musk’s claims that the monkey subjects suffered from “extreme suffering” has sparked public outrage. But it was his defiant tweet in September, proclaiming, “no monkey has died as a result of a Neuralink implant,” that set off alarm bells. Representatives Earl Blumenauer, Barbara Lee, James McGovern, and Tony Cárdenas argue in their letter that Musk knowingly misled investors about the safety of Neuralink’s revolutionary technology. That’s a monkey wrench in the works!
But it doesn’t end there. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a non-profit organization, has also called on the SEC to investigate Musk for securities fraud. They claim to have obtained veterinary records revealing the euthanization of “previously healthy” monkeys due to infections and brain swelling caused by the implant. This has many wondering: has Musk’s love for science gone too far, or is it just monkey business?

Despite the uproar, Neuralink is setting its sights on even bigger things—the eagerly anticipated human trials. With FDA approval already in the bag, thousands of brave souls have signed up to join the wild ride and become part of the Neuralink universe. The company plans to operate on 11 people next year and a whopping 22,000 by 2030. That’s a mind-boggling number and certainly not for the faint of heart!
The allure of Neuralink lies in its potential to help those with paralysis and quadriplegia regain full-body movement. Musk has even gone as far as suggesting that his brain chip could save humanity from the looming threat of AI. Talk about mind control!
As the controversy rages on, the question remains: has Musk truly pushed the boundaries of ethical science or is this just another chapter in his quest to change the world? We can only hope that the truth of the monkey matter will be revealed, and that justice will prevail. But one thing’s for sure: when it comes to Elon Musk, there’s never a dull moment.
