Lenovo Takes on Circularity Powering a New Wave of User-Friendly Devices with a Twist!

Lenovo Embraces Circularity Fueling a Revolution of User-Friendly Devices

New generations of devices or solutions are often iterative: small but meaningful innovations that enhance productivity, unleash creativity, or increase sustainability. But every once in a while, there comes a revolutionary breakthrough that completely changes the game, reimagining our interactions with technology and raising the bar for what we expect. Imagine a world where your PC folds like origami, where screens can roll up like a newspaper, or where artificial intelligence becomes a force of its own. These awe-inspiring moments are brought to us by teams of tech wizards who dare to dream big, push limits, and challenge the status quo.

One such team is Lenovo’s Next UX (user experience) group. These talented designers and researchers go beyond the conventional to anticipate user needs and create mind-blowing experiences. They embark on a journey of design ideation, concept development, and user testing, exploring uncharted territory and sharing their recommendations across the enterprise. They are the trailblazers of tomorrow’s technology.

But not every wild idea makes it to the world of homes and offices. However, their early explorations of dual-screen laptops paved the way for the versatile Yoga Book 9i. And long before virtual meetings became the norm, these visionary designers were already imagining intuitive device ecosystems that make collaboration a breeze. Now, their sights are set on sustainability, driving the circularity and environmental consciousness that Lenovo holds dear.

At the heart of Lenovo’s Experience Group, which champions customer and employee experiences, Next UX has a special place. Their mission is to improve the end-to-end experience, putting users, customers, partners, and employees right in the center of every innovation, service, and solution. Lenovo believes that technology experiences have a unifying power, bringing people together in ways we never thought possible. From advanced learning to artificial intelligence, they are looking beyond the horizon, exploring uncharted territories, and shaping the future of collaborative work. And they are not just pioneers in technology, but also in corporate citizenship, with a strong commitment to investigating themes like circularity.

Few years ago, the Next UX team embarked on a mission to create a modular PC concept called Project Aurora. This groundbreaking idea envisioned a PC where every component, from the screen to the keyboard, could be easily replaced, giving users more control and flexibility, while extending the lifespan of their devices. It was the epitome of user-friendliness and repairability. However, the engineering challenges of cramming high-performance tech into a sleek and reliable device proved to be too formidable. But that didn’t stop these relentless designers; they pivoted and evolved their concept into something even more focused and impactful.

In a series of complementary studies conducted in 2022 and 2023, Next UX discovered that batteries were the top component that end users and IT decision makers wished to repair or replace easily. And it’s no surprise why. Poor battery health can disrupt our daily computing activities and can have a significant impact on productivity. The demand for customer-replaceable batteries was overwhelming, with the majority acknowledging the potential benefits for device lifespan and sustainability efforts.

Armed with this knowledge, the UX designers developed five concepts for a replaceable battery, each with its own level of simplicity or complexity. They even built real models, showcasing their dedication to innovation. While the easiest option—a two-step, tool-free battery swap—was the crowd favorite, users were open to all the proposed solutions. Now the challenge lies in striking the perfect balance, creating a design intervention that offers the right solution with minimal trade-offs. It’s all about taking calculated risks and delivering the ultimate user experience.

Will we see one of these innovative battery designs in our future devices? Only time will tell. For now, Lenovo remains committed to exploring all possibilities to achieve circularity—from end-user participation in replacing components to finding innovative ways to recycle e-waste. Sustainability is a core focus, permeating every aspect of the company, from asset recovery initiatives to data center sustainability. And the driving force behind this powerful innovation is the unwavering dedication to listen to the voices of customers, users, and partners, turning their visionary visions into reality.
