Threads: A Bumpy Ride with Potential

Threads

Threads, the messaging app from Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has had a rocky start. At an internal town hall meeting, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed that over half of the 100 million people who initially signed up for Threads have since dropped off. While this may sound concerning, Zuckerberg reassured the team that this drop-off is normal and expects many users to return as the app continues to add more features, such as search and a desktop version.

Chief Product Officer Chris Cox also chimed in, mentioning the possibility of integrating Threads more closely with Instagram. This move aims to enable Instagram users to see important Threads messages directly from the Instagram app. By leveraging the power of the Instagram community, Threads could potentially increase its user engagement and bring back those who have strayed.

When discussing the much-anticipated metaverse, Zuckerberg expressed his belief that mass adoption will take place in the 2030s. The metaverse holds great promise for the future, and Meta’s Reality Labs, responsible for developing virtual reality and metaverse technologies, has devoted significant resources to paving the way. However, it is worth noting that Meta’s Reality Labs has faced financial challenges, with a loss of $21 billion in the past 18 months and a total loss of $34 billion.

The decline in Threads users has been steep. Sensor Tower data from a week ago showed a 70% decrease in daily active users since the peak on July 7, with only 13 million actively engaged users remaining. Not only has the number of users dropped, but the average time spent on the app has also plummeted. On iOS, users now spend just four minutes compared to the previous average of 19 minutes, while on Android devices, the average time spent has decreased from 21 minutes to five minutes. It is worth mentioning that Threads currently caters exclusively to mobile devices and does not have a desktop version available.

Despite the challenges, Zuckerberg has shown confidence in the future of Threads. In a previous statement, he acknowledged the early success and rapid growth of the app. He emphasized the importance of improving the basics and user retention, which will take time but will pave the way for future growth. Zuckerberg draws parallels to the successful strategies implemented in other Facebook-owned platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Stories, and Reels, implying that Threads is on a similar trajectory.

While Threads may have hit some bumps along the way, it still holds great potential. With Meta’s commitment to adding new features and integrating with Instagram, the app is poised for a comeback. Considering Zuckerberg’s track record with building and enhancing successful platforms, it is only a matter of time before Threads finds its footing and establishes itself as a popular messaging app. As Meta continues to invest in the metaverse, the company is betting on a future filled with exciting possibilities for both Threads and its other ventures. So, hold onto your thread, because there’s still more to come!
