Meta Brings Back Employee Perks in Effort to Boost Morale

Meta Employee Perks

In a bid to entice employees back into the office, tech giant Meta has revived a range of employee perks, such as happy hours and branded t-shirts, according to Bloomberg1. This move comes after a year of layoffs and tensions surrounding Meta’s return-to-office policies, and it has been met with positive feedback from staff2.

During what CEO Mark Zuckerberg referred to as the “year of efficiency,” Meta cut back on employee perks, including company merch, happy hours, and snack bars3. However, as part of the company’s renewed efforts to bring employees back to the office, these perks are being reinstated4.

The revived perks include not only branded t-shirts and happy hours but also laundry services and free haircuts5. These offerings were temporarily sacrificed as Meta focused on reducing costs and increasing profitability, resulting in a workforce reduction of about 25% since November 20226. Nevertheless, the company has also begun rehiring some of those who lost their jobs7.

While some perks were scaled back rather than completely eliminated, employees reported a decline in office amenities, with some offices even running out of La Croix, a popular sparkling drink among staff8. However, a Meta spokesperson clarified that dinner, happy hour, and company swag had never truly disappeared but were adjusted due to the pandemic and budget constraints9.

In addition to the revived perks, Meta has introduced a new coffee bar and earlier dinners to further entice employees back to the office10. These efforts reflect the company’s shift from the initial support for remote work, as Mark Zuckerberg had previously suggested that up to half of Meta’s employees could be remote by 203011. However, Meta recently announced a stricter policy, requiring employees to work in the office at least three days a week and warning that repeated non-compliance could lead to job loss12.

As of now, Meta has not commented on these developments in response to a request from Insider13. Nevertheless, the revival of employee perks signifies Meta’s commitment to bolstering staff morale and encouraging a return to the office in what has been a challenging period of uncertainty and change.
