Talia Jomini Stroud, director of the Center for Media Engagement at the University of Texas at Austin, stated, “We find that algorithms are extremely influential in people’s on-platform experiences and there is significant ideological segregation in political news exposure.” This highlights the power algorithms hold in shaping our online experiences and the extent of political polarization on social media platforms like Facebook.

The researchers experimented with various changes to the algorithms and observed users’ responses. Surprisingly, when they replaced the algorithm with a simple chronological listing of posts from friends, there was no measurable impact on polarization. Similarly, reducing the content from accounts with the same ideological alignment did not significantly affect polarization or susceptibility to misinformation. These findings suggest that users actively seek out content that aligns with their views, and algorithms merely facilitate this behavior.
Furthermore, eliminating the algorithm altogether drastically reduced the time users spent on Facebook or Instagram. This emphasizes the importance of algorithms in keeping users engaged on these platforms, especially considering their increasing competition from sites like TikTok and YouTube.
In response to these research findings, Meta’s president for global affairs, Nick Clegg, stated that their platforms alone do not cause harmful polarization or have a meaningful impact on political attitudes, beliefs, or behaviors. However, Katie Harbath, Facebook’s former director of public policy, sees these studies as a reminder that polarization and political beliefs are complex issues that cannot be solely attributed to social media.
The research also shed light on the ideological differences between Facebook users. Conservative users were found to consume more content labeled as misinformation by fact-checkers and had access to more conservative news sources. Alarmingly, 97% of the political news sources on Facebook identified as spreading misinformation were more popular with conservatives than liberals.
