Moscow Hit by Suspected Ukrainian Drone Attacks: Escalating Tensions in the Conflict

Moscow, Russia’s capital, has once again been targeted by a series of drone attacks, suspected to be carried out by Ukraine. These attacks have become a growing concern for Moscow, causing more psychological damage than physical harm. The apparent attacks, according to Ukrainian officials, will continue until there is a change in the situation.

The recent wave of drone attacks on Moscow is particularly troublesome, as it marks the fourth time the city has been targeted in just over a week. While the incidents have caused relatively minimal damage, they have raised concerns about the proximity of the conflict in Ukraine to Russia’s doorstep. Ukraine’s leadership, along with its spy agency, has hinted that these attacks will persist.

In response to the most recent attack, Russia’s defense ministry released a statement claiming to have “foiled” a Ukrainian drone attack by using air-defense systems to destroy two drones in the air. Another drone was reportedly intercepted by electronic warfare means but subsequently lost control and crashed into a building in downtown Moscow. Images of the damaged building show a puncture in the glass exterior and debris in the street below. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties.

Despite Ukraine not immediately claiming responsibility for the attack, some officials acknowledged it and took the opportunity to criticize Russia. Mykhailo Podolyak, an advisor to Ukraine’s Presidential Office, expressed on Twitter that Moscow is “rapidly getting used to a full-fledged war” and that it will soon face the consequences for its actions. Podolyak further emphasized that more drone attacks will lead to more collapse, civil conflicts, and ultimately, more war in Russia.

The Moscow area has become increasingly targeted by drones in recent months, with experts speculating that Ukraine seeks to retaliate and give Russia a “taste of its own medicine.” These attacks, even when resulting in minimal damage, have a significant psychological impact on the Russian population.

July alone saw four drone attacks, and the frequency seems to have increased further in the past week. On July 24, a drone struck a building near the Russian defense ministry headquarters, followed by two more attacks over the weekend. Russian President Vladimir Putin has attempted to keep the war in Ukraine distant from the Russian people. However, these recent drone attacks suggest that the conflict may be closer to home than the Kremlin would prefer. Ukrainian officials predict that the situation will only worsen for Russia, suggesting that the country deserves the consequences it faces.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in an address to the nation on the same day as another drone attack on Moscow, stated that “the war is returning to the territory of Russia” and it is a fair and natural process. These attacks demonstrate Ukraine’s ability to strike Russia even within its symbolic centers and military bases, challenging Russia’s sense of security.

Ukraine’s military intelligence service (GUR) spokesperson, Andrii Yusov, openly argued the legitimacy of striking Russia. He emphasized that no representative of the occupation army or regime within Russia can feel safe while Ukraine fights against Russian aggression. The Ukrainian military’s long-range capabilities have kept the Kremlin on edge throughout the war, with strikes on Russian bases situated beyond the front lines and within Russia’s internationally recognized borders.

While Ukraine considers these strikes fair retaliation against Russian aggression, Western countries have taken a more cautious approach. There is concern that Russia may respond disproportionately and escalate the conflict further. While historically critical of such actions, US officials have acknowledged Russia’s role in instigating the war and encouraged Russia to end it by withdrawing its forces from Ukraine instead of launching brutal attacks against Ukrainian cities and people on a daily basis.

The recent drone attacks in Moscow highlight the escalating tensions in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The strategic use of drones is not only causing psychological damage but also challenging Russia’s perceived security. As the conflict unfolds, the international community closely watches the situation, hoping for a resolution that will bring peace to the region.
