San Francisco Mayor Takes a Stance on Elon Musk’s Antics at X

San Francisco Mayor London Breed

In a recent turn of events, San Francisco Mayor London Breed expressed her disapproval of Elon Musk’s recent antics at X, the company formerly known as Twitter. Mayor Breed stressed that nobody should be exempt from following the rules, not even Musk.

The controversy began when local police intervened in X’s attempt to remove the Twitter sign outside its headquarters. Mayor Breed emphasized that while creative and unique ideas are welcome, they must also adhere to proper procedures, such as obtaining permits. “No one can be above the rules,” the mayor told Bloomberg. “You can’t just change your sign, obstruct traffic, and not even ask for permission.”

However, the situation escalated over the weekend as X replaced the Twitter sign with a massive flashing “X” on top of its office building, which caused outrage among the company’s neighbors. Subsequently, the Department of Building Inspection served X a Notice of Violation for operating without a permit and for the unsafe condition of the building. The city of San Francisco received 24 complaints about the light-up sign, with residents citing poor construction and disturbances.

Mayor Breed expressed concern that X’s actions were diverting attention from the other remarkable aspects the city has to offer. In a statement to Bloomberg, her office stated, “Twitter, now X, represents one thing in San Francisco, but we have so many other incredible companies and important parts of our city that hardly get any attention.” The mayor’s office also emphasized the city’s commitment to ensuring that property owners, including X, follow the necessary procedures for permits and timely notifications.

Elon Musk has been critical of San Francisco in the past, but on Monday, he acknowledged the city’s significance, saying, “It’s important for more people to come to work in San Francisco, or the rest of the city can’t survive.” However, the X sign issue is just one of several challenges Musk is currently facing in San Francisco. The company is also embroiled in lawsuits, including allegations of unpaid rent and legal actions initiated by former employees.

As of now, representatives for Mayor Breed, Elon Musk, and X have not provided any comments on the matter. It remains to be seen how this disagreement will unfold and if a resolution can be reached that satisfies both the city and X.
