Target and Starbucks Join Forces for Curbside Delivery Nationwide

Target and Starbucks are teaming up to bring the joy and convenience of curbside delivery to customers across the United States. Starting this fall, Target shoppers nationwide will have the option to order Starbucks food and beverages for curbside pickup through the retailer’s Drive Up service. This collaboration aims to enhance the overall shopping experience and provide customers with even more reasons to love Target.

A Perfect Match

The partnership between Target and Starbucks is a natural fit. Target has approximately 2,000 stores in the US, with over 1,700 of them housing Starbucks cafés. The decision to expand the Drive Up service to include Starbucks ordering came after a year of successful testing in select stores. The overwhelmingly positive feedback from customers prompted the nationwide rollout.

“We’ve continued listening to our guests, who’ve told us overwhelmingly that Drive Up with Starbucks would bring even more ease and joy to every Target run,” said Mark Schindele, Chief Stores Officer at Target.

This expansion showcases Target’s commitment to meeting customer needs and providing an exceptional shopping experience. By offering the convenience of curbside pickup for Starbucks items, Target is enhancing the overall value proposition for customers.

Drive Up Delights

The Target app will prompt drive-up customers to add a Starbucks item to their order and to customize it.

When utilizing the Drive Up service, customers can place an order through the Target app or website. The order is then prepared within two hours or less, and customers are prompted to indicate their arrival through the app. At this point, customers have the opportunity to add a Starbucks food or beverage order for pick-up.

Upon arrival, a Target employee will bring the Starbucks order along with the customer’s other purchases right to their car. Insider recently tested the service and found that the Starbucks items were carefully brought out in a compact cardboard carrier placed inside a paper Starbucks bag, alongside the rest of the customer’s merchandise. This ensures that the integrity and quality of the Starbucks products are maintained.

Managing Demand and Boosting Sales

To prevent overcrowding and ensure a smooth operation, Target has implemented an innovative approach. Customers ordering Starbucks items through Drive Up will need to pair their order with a purchase from Target’s app or website. This purchase requirement serves a dual purpose: keeping Starbucks order volumes under control and potentially boosting sales for Target.

By implementing this condition, Target ensures that it can manage the demand for Starbucks products effectively and provide excellent service to all customers. Moreover, the added incentive of needing to purchase an item from Target creates an opportunity for customers to explore other products that may pique their interest.

The move aligns with Target’s strategy in recent quarters, where the retailer has been focused on driving sales growth. Integrating Starbucks ordering with Drive Up serves as an innovative solution to both cater to customer demands and stimulate revenue.

Smooth Sailing and Future Expansion

While the idea of carrying a tray of hot beverages along with grocery items under a tight time deadline initially raised concerns among employees, the rollout has been smoother than anticipated. Employees at various locations have expressed satisfaction with the process, even after conducting trial runs. The training and preparations undertaken by Target have ensured that the Drive Up service with Starbucks integration runs efficiently.

As of now, Starbucks ordering through Drive Up is available in select states, including California, Colorado, and Michigan. However, Target plans to expand the service to all its locations by October this year. This nationwide availability will bring the convenience of curbside pickup for Starbucks products to customers across the country.

Target is committed to continuously refining and improving the ordering and fulfillment process for Drive Up with Starbucks. The collaboration offers an exciting opportunity for customers to enjoy their favorite Starbucks items with the added convenience of curbside delivery from a trusted and beloved retailer.

So, whether you’re in the mood for a Pumpkin Spice Latte or any other Starbucks delight, Target’s Drive Up service has got you covered. Stay tuned as Target expands this service to bring even more ease and joy to your shopping experience.
