Ukraine Hits Russian Warship in Black Sea Attack
Ukraine has launched a daring attack on a Russian warship in the Black Sea using sea drones. Videos posted on social media suggest that the attack was successful, despite Russian claims to the contrary. The footage shows explosions at the Russian port of Novorossiysk.
A Ukrainian source revealed that a sea drone equipped with 450 kilograms of TNT had targeted a Russian ship with approximately 100 servicemen on board. This incident marks the first time a commercial Russian port has been targeted by Ukrainian drones since the start of the war 18 months ago.
Novorossiysk is located far from Ukrainian-held territory, making it a challenging mission for the Ukrainian forces to reach it with an attack. Russian officials admitted that an attack had taken place but maintained that no damage had been done.
The Russian Ministry of Defense stated on Telegram, “Tonight, the Armed Forces of Ukraine, with the use of two unmanned sea boats, attempted an attack on the Novorossiysk naval base of the Russian Armed Forces.” However, videos uploaded by Ukrainian officials on social media contradict this claim.
Dashcam footage shared by Anton Gerashchenko, an advisor to the Ukrainian Minister of Internal Affairs, shows a Ukrainian sea drone heading towards the Russian warship and crashing into its side before the signal cuts off. Another video taken afterwards depicts the ship being towed away, visibly damaged and listing to one side.

While it has not been officially confirmed which ship was targeted, a source from the Security Service of Ukraine identified it as the Olenegorkiy Gornya, a large landing ship with around 100 crew members. The source informed ANBLE that the ship had sustained a serious breach and was unable to carry out its combat missions.
The veracity of the videos has not been independently verified, and Ukrainian officials have refrained from commenting on the attack due to security concerns. However, Veniamin Kondratiev, the governor of the Krasnodar region where the base is located, stated that there were no casualties resulting from the attack.
This incident follows a recent increase in Ukrainian attacks on Russia’s Black Sea Fleet. Just days ago, Russia’s Ministry of Defense reported thwarting another drone attack targeting patrol boats southwest of Sevastopol. A similar attack had also been repelled earlier in the week.
Ukraine recently showcased its new sea drone, which boasts significant explosive capability and outpaces any other vessel in the Black Sea. A drone pilot with the codename “Shark” revealed that the drone had successfully impeded the movements of the Russian Navy. However, it remains unclear if this specific drone was responsible for the attack on Friday.
The escalation of attacks in the Black Sea highlights the increasingly tense situation between Ukraine and Russia. While the conflict continues to unfold, it is evident that Ukraine’s use of innovative technology, such as sea drones, gives them the ability to challenge Russia’s dominance in the region. The repercussions of these attacks on the dynamics of the conflict and the geopolitical landscape in the Black Sea remain to be seen.
