Ukrainian commander shares terrifying encounter with Russian fake trench trap.
Russia’s Deadly Obstacles: Fake Trenches and Explosive Drones
In the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Russia has employed various tactics to impede Ukraine’s counteroffensive. Among these tactics are fake trenches rigged with remotely detonated mines, as detailed by a Ukrainian commander known as Voskres in an interview with The New York Times.
The assault commander described an offensive operation conducted by Ukrainian forces with special operations training. However, the mission encountered numerous challenges right from the start. The Ukrainian troops’ armored vehicles were quickly destroyed by artillery, forcing them to proceed on foot.
As they advanced towards the Russian lines after clearing part of a treacherous minefield, the Ukrainian forces dropped into what they believed to be a safe trench, ready for combat. Little did they know, these trenches were secretly mined. The commander recounted, “Our guys started jumping in the trenches and blowing up,” as the Russians remotely detonated the hidden mines, while explosive drones attacked the survivors. The overwhelming amount of Russian equipment caught the Ukrainian forces off guard, making their mission feel like a scene from “Mission Impossible.”
These terrifying incidents are not isolated occurrences. Michael Kofman, a Russia expert at the Center for Naval Analyses, recently shared his findings on Russia’s deceptive tactics in the War on the Rocks podcast. Kofman explained that Russia constructs fake trenches and mines, attempting to lure Ukrainian forces into them and then detonating the rigged explosives. He also revealed that the Russians intentionally leave sections of the trenches empty, enticing the Ukrainians to enter and subsequently triggering the explosions. These stories from the Ukrainian assault commander and Kofman’s research confirm the existence and effectiveness of these deadly traps.
The presence of explosive-laden trenches, however, is just one aspect of Russia’s multi-layered defense. In addition to these deadly traps, Russia has constructed a defense in depth strategy, combining various barriers, obstacles, and defensive assets such as infantry, artillery, and aviation. The Ukrainians face a formidable challenge as they navigate through these defenses.

Video footage allegedly captured near the first line of defense on the Russian side shows an anti-tank ditch swallowing a military vehicle. Although not packed with explosives, these anti-tank trenches effectively impede armored assaults, requiring significant efforts to clear them.
Despite these immense threats, the Ukrainians continue their slow and grueling advance. Many assaults are met with resistance and, at times, repelled. This offensive is far from being swift and decisive – it is a painstaking and costly endeavor.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been ongoing, with both sides employing various strategies to gain an advantage. Russia’s use of fake trenches rigged with remotely activated mines and explosive drones reveals their willingness to go to extreme lengths to thwart Ukraine’s counteroffensive. While the progress may be slow, the determination of the Ukrainian forces remains steadfast as they strive to overcome these obstacles and achieve their objectives.
